    Relevant experience and laboratory resources

    The Institute of Toxicology in Würzburg has a track record of internationally acclaimed research on the biotransformation of xenobiotics and studies related to interactions of biologically reactive intermediates with cellular macromolecules and function. Part of this is based on the application of in vitro models (freshly isolated cell preparations, cell culture, subcellular fractions and isolated perfused organs) to study mechanisms of toxicity. Furthermore, experience in human exposure studies performed under controlled conditions was demonstrated by the group of Prof. Dekant for several compounds (perchloroethylene, trichloroethylene, bisphenol A, methyl tert-butyl ether). The laboratory is/was funded by the European Union, the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the Bundesministerium für Forschung und Technologie, the Umweltbundesamt, the US EPA, the US HEI, industry and a number of foundations. The equipment is at the cutting edge of technology and includes gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with different ionization techniques, liquid chromatography coupled to a tandem mass spectrometer (MS-MS) with electrospray and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization interfaces, liquid chromatography coupled to a linear ion trap mass spectrometer, high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence, diode array and UV-detectors, and a full array of in vitro techniques. Chemical and radiochemical synthesis and a 600 MHz (1H)nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer is available on the campus. The laboratory has also obtained relevant experience in the application of NMR-techniques to characterize changes in the composition of body fluids induced by toxicants (Metabolomics). Prof. Dekant was a member of the Scientific Committee on Toxicity, Ecology and the Environment (CSTEE) of the European Union (whose term recently ended) and is a member of the newly formed Scientific committee on Health and Environmental Risks. He has been advisor to national and international bodies on aspects of Toxicology (EU-commission, US EPA, ECVAM, German government).

    Prof. Dekant was a member of the Scientific Committee on Toxicity, Ecology and the Environment (CSTEE) of the European Union, he is presently member of the Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER) and of the Food Additives Panel of EFSA.  He is also an editor of Toxicology Letters, associate editor of Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology and is/was a member of the editorial board of Chemical Research in Toxicology, Toxicological Sciences, and Xenobiotica. In this capacity and in activities for national and international organizations such as the WHO (ICPS, JECFA) or the US EPA, he regularly peer reviews publications and other scientific work.

    Dipl. Ing. (FH) Hannelore Popa-Henning

    Dipl. Ing. (FH) Hannelore Popa-Henning, with significant experience in management of scientific projects funded both by the EU (FP5 and FP6, INCO) and other international or national organizations, is responsible for project management as assistant to the coordinating institution.

    Role of the participant in the project and main tasks:

    The participant is responsible for coordination of the project and for WP1 and WP7 and contribute to WP’s 3 and 4.1.

    As Coordinator, the University of Würzburg will also assume the leading role in certain administrative aspects of the performance of the Project, including: drafting and negotiating a Consortium Agreement, assisting the other beneficiaries with reporting and financial issues, and providing general support on legal issues that may arise during the duration of the Project. These tasks will be secured by experienced staff within the University’s central administration.
