    Relevant experience and laboratory resources:

    Romeo Cecchelli and his team have 20 years experience in blood-brain barrier research. They were the first to set up a coculture model of bovine brain capillary endothelial cells and rat glial cells that mimics the in vivo conditions. The good in vitroin vivo correlation supports the use of this coculture system as relevant model for making predictions of drug transport to the brain. This model does not require sophisticated methods and equipment. It is already used in different academic laboratories and pharmaceutical companies. They are qualified to produce a state of art level in vitro culture of BBB. They were the first to demonstrate the transcellular transport of blood-borne molecules using the caveolae pathway that bypass the degradative lysosomial compartment. Taking into account their background in endothelial cell culture and coculture, they will provide a new in vitro 4 days BBB model in 24 well-plates which can be used for primary screening (HTS). They will focus their work on the role of the BBB in neurotoxicity using neuronal and glial cell cultures. The group has notable experience in other European Union projects including FP6 ACUTE-TOX (WP5) and European Commission contract n°CCR.IHCP. C431931.XO: 2006-2007.
